The essences of Harrison's New Orleans roots and participation in traditional jazz and brass band ensembles resonate with emotions in the second-line version. In the sixties and seventies, he participated in the second-line culture with his father, Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr. Harrison loved dancing with the Eureka and Olympia Brass Band second-liners on Sundays. They also attended sit-down performances of traditional jazz, Cajun, zydeco, funk, soul, and R&B groups. In high school, the fledgling artist played in brass bands under the wing of the great clarinetist Dr. Michael White. Nineteen-year-old Harrison wrote "New York Second-line" in 1979. This early recording is a testament to his lifelong participation in the culture of New Orleans. Forty-six years later, "The Magic Touch" (second line version) reiterates his love for New Orleans and the concept of merging music and culture with modern jazz into a unified style. Drummer Troy Davis sends the band grooving hard with a rollicking beat. Pianist Shea Pierre mixes modern ideas with the New Orleans piano sound. Max Moran is fluid and adept at capturing many styles of music on bass. He lays down an incredible bass orchestration that is both foundational and buoyant. Harrison's intelligent saxophone sound soars over the top. Second-liners say, "Roll wit it!"
